This week I took my first few. And that very first one hurt, as I detailed in my earlier blog about regurgitation and knee pain. But since that initial step, things have been getting a little better for yours truly. Small as it is, I've made every workout set forth for myself this week (with the possible exception of missing tonight's; it's Friday) and I have to say that I'm a little proud of myself. I am a little proud of myself because missing workouts has always been my biggest problem when it comes to training for races. When I actually do the workouts I typically do them well, and sometimes will go above and beyond the prescribed workout. Oftentimes my overachieving is due the guilt that I missed the previous three, but I digress. So it's not the actual exercise that is the hard part for me it's a combination of two things that make me miss workouts, and let me know if this sounds familiar; 1) Motivation. When I'm sitting on the couch after work anticipating my wife coming home the prospect of going out for a run is usually pretty daunting. 2) Time. This one I think I'll probably have a fair amount of support on. Between work and home who has the time to devote 11, 12, 20 hours a week to training? Lots of people is the answer to that. And I'm trying to put myself back into that group, but it's a hard one to enter. But before I get started on the slippery slope of how dedicated I used to be to fitness and making every workout (which really wasn't so great because if you miss a team practice you don't get to swim in the meet), I will just say that I'm feeling pretty good about myself this week for getting off my keester and doing something physical. It feels good to be moving, and feel that tired, vague soreness that comes from a good workout. Here's to many more.
