Ouch

Oops. I knew I shouldn’t have gone it alone the first couple of weeks after surgery, but I thought I would toughen myself up first before letting Coach at me. So, I set myself back another couple of weeks. Anyways, I strained my hamstring.

I tested the waters the last two days. Only a little soreness remains. I think I may give up on my tri ambitions this year and just focus on getting healthy. If I can pull a marathon out by fall I will be very happy.

So, Jay I am ready to go. I would like to chat about a game plan to back to the Ironman plan in 08. I like to be able to run a good 5k and 10k by summer. Then move up to half marathon by late summer. It would be nice to just finish a sub 4 marathon by fall. Cheers

Nice Week

I had a great week. This was my second week of working out since my surgery back in February. I had two good runs and some great sessions on the stationary bike. I ended up feeling so good on the stationary that I decided to move up to the CompuTrainer for my bike workout on Sunday. The bike seems to be coming back quicker than the running. I had to stop myself after nearly 2 hours just so I didn’t over do it.

This is my first week traveling for work again. I am current traveling to NYC. I hope the hotel gym isn’t too jammed up in the early morning. I also hope the treadmill works well, especially this time of year while the streets are so sloppy. There is no way I want to go outside this week to run.

I am thinking that after I adjust to traveling this week and keep up the working out that I will be ready for Coach Jay to take over and get me back on a plan again.

 Cheers

Week 1 of fitness training
Monday, March 12, 2007

The past week I would deem a success. My first full week after surgery of staying motivated to be physically active. I started out the week at 203.5 lbs and riding my stationary bike. I ended the week at 197.5 lbs. I built up the stationary ride to 1 hour. On Sunday I jogged 1.3 miles. The jog was very slow, but it felt like a great accomplishment. The only thing I forgot to do is stretch each day. I am paying for that mistake with tons of soreness.

This week I plan to keep on a restricted calorie diet and drop another 2 lbs. I will alternate between jogging and stationary. I would like to work my way back to a 5k jog. If I feel good about my results and not scared about hurting myself, I would like to start back up with Coach Jay probably the week after next.

Cheers

Recovery

Last season I trained pretty hard. I completed multiple 5Ks, half marathon, marathon, short distance tri, and a half ironman. On November 19th, 2006 after running in the Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa my training came to an end.  Between mile sixteen and eighteen I had a tremendous amount of back pain. I thought my kidney was failing me. I did not give up on the race. I slowly trotted my way to the finish line to complete in less than four hours.

After returning home I began testing to see what was wrong with me. The doctors had found a hole in my diaphragm. Basically, a mass about the size of a softball had moved from my abdominal cavity up into my chest cavity.  Well, after many appointments and preparations I finally had surgery on February 1, 2007.

The experience of the surgery was tough.  They had tried to go through my abdomen to repair the hole. However, due to the location of the hole in the rear of the diaphragm by my spinal cord they could not get to it. This left me with six holes in my abdomen. They then flipped my over and fitted me with a chest tube and went through my rib cage. This left me with four entries though my rib cage.

I woke up in the ICU a little scared and confused. I was in the ICU for four days. On the fourth day I had a little set back. After the chest tube was pulled out I went over to have an x-ray to see if my lungs were in good shape. What they found was my left lung was partially collapsed. I got out of the hospital after the seventh day.

The surgery really left me in a lot of pain and the month of February has been a blur. I was on multiple narcotics to ease the pain. By direction of the doctors I needed to get my breathing back up to get my lung in shape. So, I spent time walking and doing some easy stationary bike work.

I am still in some pain without the narcotics, but I am ready to start my road back to recovery. I am signed up for Mooseman Half Iron and Lake Placid Ironman, but I don’t think I will make it this year. I have not done any fitness training since the Route 66 Marathon in November.

Pre surgery weight was 190.

My weight today was 203.5.

Goals for the week: Have a solid week on the stationary bike. Work up to one hour at 90-95 RPMs.  This weekend I am going to try to walk/jog 1 mile. I need to get back on to a health diet this week. I ate too much comfort food.

This morning I rode the stationary for 50 minutes at 90-95 RPMs.

Cheers
