Spare tire blues
Wednesday, January 31, 2007

I'm blessed with the metabolism of a coastal redwood. I'm down to about 1500-1800 calories per day, and I can't seem to break past around 187-188 pounds. Maybe some has to do with age, but damn!! Any suggestions out there?

Anyway, TT this weekend. Hope to have a decent showing before the much more competitive Fiesat Island TT in San Diego on Feb. 11.

Damn, it's cold.....
Sunday, January 21, 2007

Southern California is freezing, literally! Up here on the mountain, it has not topped 38 all week. Most mornings, it's in the low 20's. Right now, at 2:30pm, it's 29.

Went down the hill yesterday and rode the Lytle Creek climb with a team mate. It was 50 when we started with a head wind. On the way down, the marine layer rolled in to drop the temps more. Finished strong, but chilled to the bone. A nice chile relleno dinner at the end made up for it.

We had our 1st Team DARE meeting last night. Real sharp group of riders. Several Cat 1's and 2's, and a lot of young Cat 3's. The law enforcment roster is at 10 officers from San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles Counties. Got into the raffle and picked up a Profile Designs base bar, aero bar, and stem; about $200.00 worth of schwag.

Gotta start picking it up next week! TT on the 11th of Feb and 1st crit of the season on the 25th of Feb.

BY THE WAY, ANYBODY READ THIS STUFF?

1st TT a new team bike
Sunday, January 14, 2007

The new team bike, a Specialized Transition S-Works, was definitely faster than the rider! Despite this being Southern California, it was only 27 degrees at race time. They moved the start of the course due to road hazards, so we hit a climb about 250 meters in. Unfortunately, the cold air kicked off an asthma attack that left me peddling well below my top end. I recovered somewhat at the turn and pulled back some time on the return. Still, nowhere near my average run the course. Oh well.....

A big thanks to Don's Bike's and Team D.A.R.E. for the sponsorship. Better start living up to my end of the bargain!!!

Happy New Year!
Thursday, January 4, 2007

Having signed on to do some racing this year, I'm really focusing on dropping some weight right now. In October, I was coming in around 198 lbs. As of today, I'm 187 and looking to drop down to 175+/-. Fortunately, my wife is dieting, which makes food selection a lot easier. And,she supports the time involved in training.

My racing goal is to be good and ready for the Southern California/Nevada Time Trial championships in May. So far, so good. In 3 races, I've already bettered my prior PR by 1:28. I'm pretty excited because the next race, I'll be riding my first TT specific bike.
