Sunday Ride: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
Tuesday, January 31, 2006

Had a ride Sunday.  The Good: it was dry and we rode outside.  We did a power test and my coach thought it went well.  I got a massage in the afternoon.  The Bad: it was cold and it didn't warm up as time went on.  The Ugly: When we got back to AL James and I continued on for a little ride up in the hills whereupon I got to display my abyssmal climbing.  It was bad.  It will get better but right now whatever time I might make on my coach on the flat he could more than double in return when the road turns UP.  It's part body weight, part fitness, part physiology and part technique.  I will have to lose weight and that alone will make a difference in my climbing.  My fitness will continue to improve as the year wears on and with practice, I can get better at my gear selection and knowing when/how to get out of the saddle on climbs.

So we got a baseline on my power and heart rate and identified one of my significant weaknesses on the bike.

Had a 90 min Thai Massage with DJ DeAustria.  A much different technique than traditional Swedish or Sports/Deep Tissue massage.  It combines pressure, trigger point or myofacial massage and stretching.  I was encouraged by how it went and I'm going to work with DJ for a while and see to what degree we can improve my range of motion.  Really interested in seeing how it impacts my run.

I also met Ed another one of James' athletes, he too had the distinct pleasure of doing a power test today.  So another potential riding partner as the season moves along.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the second of three Orthovisc injections for my right knee.  It does seem to help and the benefit seems to last for about 5-6 months.  I figure I'll be ready for my second round of injections in mid/late July...just in time for IM Canada.
