The Gift of Time
Sunday, November 9, 2008

I've been toying with the idea of starting a journaling process. It's easiest to type, as my handwriting is atrocious and I'd never transcribe it for the masses. Not sure I want just anyone to see what I've got to say, but here goes.  I"ll deal with security issues as I continue to populate this tool.

I've have time to reflect on the various aspect of my daily life these days.  This gift of time comes in waves with the lack of structure that being laid off on October 16th has created in my daily life. My wheel of life looks a bit more like the blue wheel sticker known so well in the Dead Head circles.  The Wheel with a broken spoke and red roses woven through it.  "The Wheel is turning, going round and round, sometimes up and sometimes down".

The Wheel of Life, a chocolate groom's cake at my wedding. Literally, we had the cake made to look like the sticker I refer to above.  A sign of things to come?  The highs and lows that come with life, a reminder that when we are at the bottom, things can only get better and when we are at our highest, remember the lows are also part of the cycle.  We're often somewhere in between the highs and lows and this is just daily life.

Work, family, training, social, eat/sleep - The life of a triathlete.  All things needing to be in balance for the wheel to roll true.  One thing draws too little or too much of your resources and all the other ones need to compensate for you to remain whole.

I loved my job, couldn't complain, really. It'd been slowing down for some time, as the economy began to decline about 12 months ago.  Less and less patients would book for nutrition counseling, they would push out re-testing visits, they asked which supplements were the highest priority. The signs were there.  I rolled along; work, studying to complete my Masters degree, training, supporting my husband's own goals with coaching and his IM, contribute time and energy to a women's multi-sport endurance team (Links for Life California) to raise awareness and funds for local children's charities.

I have the gift of time, now, as a "semi-pro" triathlete trying to reconcile the fact that I am not sure I want to go back to a 40-50 hours per week corporate job after 48 months in a new career that has been very rewarding.  Empowering people through lifestyle coaching; educating them how to care for their body using foods and exercise.  Since my services are discretionary expenses for most people, I will need to figure out what my new path well become.
