Are you a teenager of the 80's???

It was a packed week!  I attempted to cram a lot of tough workouts in during the week since my husband and I were going out of town for the weekend (WITHOUT THE KIDS!!); so, it was tough to motivate to fit in my final workout of the week at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning since my legs were so tired.  My casual 16 mile long run "jaunt" through Queeny Park is a very hilly 4 mile loop in st Louis.  One of my training friends and I attempted to focus on our nutrition during the run but by Lap 2 we started to discuss the topic of favorite college eats.  Lap 2 covered appetizers, and casual bar food, Lap 3 focused on our fav dining joints and by Lap 4 I was probably too excited to be finishing that I did not gel up before the final lap and instead consoled myself with thoughts of my favorite LATE NIGHT junk food haunts - greasy pizza and breadsticks!

The 24-hour getaway date was a chance to visit our old college - Indiana University - and the opportunity to relive a lot of fun memories!  We timed our weekend perfectly because not only was IU playing Michigan State in basketball but also we got to watch the drama unfold for our "latest" basketball coach, Kelvin Sampson, who might soon be unemployed!  The Hoosiers pulled off a great upset, and I tried to reload my carbo stores at our former drinking establishments inlcuding Nick's and Kilroys.  Needless to say I did not fare very well, I think I maxed out at 3 1/2 beers!!! Jim disagrees because he distinctly remembers polishing of my 2nd beer at Nick's so his count for me puts me up at 2 3/4.  Regardless, it was still a concerted effort by this lightweight endurance athlete!

Sunday a.m. included a drive home in which I tried to stretch my sore legs due to the week's effort.  It was also intermittently infused with alternate loads of caffeine and gatorade as we both could not decide if it was more important to hydrate or to stay awake for the car ride. BUT, as soon as I felt myself nodding off, Jim put on the 80's XM station and were were treated to Casey Kasem's Weekly TOP 40 this week in 1981!!!  Then, I suddenly realized while listening to the music that this was the beginning of the END - the Big Hair Bands, love ballads, and cheesy music videos.  What I thought might be a boring ride home turned into a modified recovery dance in the car as we tried to recall the lyrics and tunes of our favorite and most hated 80's songs.  Do you want to know the top 3 of this week in 1981?  #3 was "I Love a Rainy Night" by Eddie Rabbit, #2 was "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton - are you serious???, and the grand finale #1 was "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang.

How to get FREE coffee from Starbucks
Monday, December 10, 2007

I awoke at 4:40 a.m. today rearing to go for my first day back in training after my 4 week off-season.  Although I am still somewhat congested from chest cold I got from my triplets, feeling a lot better.  I promised myself today I would not sit on the edge of the pool and socialize for 20 minutes!  Well, I did pretty well today, only talked for 10 minutes and in I jumped!  Long sets: 5 x 200 and 5 x 500, it was fun giving the other swimmers in my lane trouble by grabbing their feet if I caught up to them.

I decided to quickly grab a grande coffee from Starbucks after swim practice as my therapy to handle 3 over-excited 6 year olds on our 30 minutes drive to school for Kindergarten.  Woah!  No sooner had I parked and stepped off the 2 foot ledge from the upper parking lot at Starbucks, my feet touched what I thought was wet ground and I went flying like superman in the air!  First landing on my bum and then flying forward on to my hands.  Several bystanders drinking their coffee inside came running out to check on me to try and help me in the store - I even got a nice round of applause from other caffeinated drinkers! Luckily, the Starbucks employees decided that I should receive in return a TONIC for all the excitement I caused, handing immediately over to me not a bandaid or bag of ice but a free drink!  Although a nice consolation prize, I do not think I will repeat this death-defying act again!

 70.3 World report to come............

For now, if someone were to do a biography of my life the last 3 1/2 weeks it would be something like:  sleep, eat, drink, eat junk food, kid/family duties; more junk food, sleep.  It has certainly caught up with me!  The bonus at the end of multiple nights out and consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a night is a horrible cold.  I think everyone I know is sick now!  Goals for this week are to get better with no antibiotics and resume structured training next week.  I am also in the process of identifying my key races and goals for next year - how fun!  There is nothing quite like having a chance to start over and try to identify what you would like to improve on and achieve in the coming year... stay tuned.

This week my kids officially started Kindergarten - what?  Did someone say I might have free time now??? It is also their 6-year-old birthday today!  I spent yesterday filling up my cart at Toys r Us with buzz, star wars, and princesses only to hear the cashier ask if I was stocking up on Christmas presents early!

To celebrate the day I unfortunately have to ride my trainer due to the pouring rain outside.  I am feeling a lot better than I did when I raced last weekend.  The antibiotics have really helped!  I cannot wait to race the USAT Halfmax Long Course National Championships next weekend right here in my own backyard!

Labor Day!

Today is a recovery day, easy swim, since I raced on Saturday at the Lake St Louis Triathlon.  This is the local championship race.  I thought I was recovered from my cold prior to the race - but learned shortly after the race when I dropped by the urgent care clinic that I had a bad case of bronchitis!  I am happy that I improved my overall time from last year by 10 minutes despite being sick and definitely not feeling my best.  Time was 2:26:00, not a PR but 7th overall among the females and 1st in my age group.
